Supporting parents of SEND pupils: growing up, relationships and sex

Speakeasy Parents course

Speakeasy works with parents and carer-givers of children and young people with additional learning needs, learning disabilities or neurodivergence, helping them feel confident in talking to their children about growing up, relationships, and sex. By supporting parents and carers to have these conversations, we reduce stress, isolation and uncertainty, and strengthen family resilience. SEND pupils need to be supported by families who can ‘echo’ the messages and learning being delivered in school, and it can be difficult for them to know which language to use, how to start conversations about sensitive topics and how to answer unexpected questions from their children.

Speakeasy Ready to Run

The SEND specific Speakeasy Ready to Run course is delivered to up to 16 professionals. This will equip them to deliver their own Speakeasy parent courses in their local settings.

The programme will run over two days online

Learning outcomes

  1. To become familiar with the key aspects of sexual health and development, especially as these relate to puberty changes, safer sex and the impact of the digital world
  2. To understand the role of parents in the delivery of RSE  with particular attention to the diversity of learning needs
  3. To understand the principles, practice and delivery methods of the Speakeasy programme
  4. To understand how to plan, deliver and evaluate a Speakeasy parents group

The facilitator is Mel Gadd. Mel runs projects and training on sex and relationships, previously for FPA (Family Planning Association) where more than half of their clients had a learning disability and/or were on the autistic spectrum. She delivers trainings in schools, colleges and community settings. She now runs a social enterprise, Sex Education Company. Mel lives in Wales. Mel facilitated excellent training courses for professionals and parents and carers in Northumberland in 2019 about masturbation.
