Independent Travel Training for young people with additional needs

Northumberland County Council’s independent travel training programme teaches those with additional needs how to travel independently and safely between home and their school or workplace.

Please share this video with parents and carers who qualify:

  • Young people with additional needs who have an active EHCP and access council commissioned home to school travel
  • Need to have the aspiration and ability to learn to travel independently

What will the programme cover?

The programme will be in two stages:

At stage 1, we will gain an understanding of the student’s needs and requirements, assessing their ability to travel independently. Stage 1 will be carried out during the school day, both in the classroom and out in the community.

If the student is successful at stage 1, they will continue to stage 2 of the programme, which will cover route assessment and accompanied travel.

Stage 2 will be carried out, before, during and after school, out in the community.
