Spark Northumberland – bringing local employers into primary classrooms

Northumberland County Council is proud to support the launch of Spark Northumberland, a new curriculum-led careers platform helping primary school children discover the world of work on their doorstep.

Developed by Connect Northumberland with Spark Futures, and backed by the Council alongside the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Tony Platten Foundation via the Community Foundation, the platform puts local employers into classrooms through short, child-friendly videos mapped to what children are already studying. No extra planning for teachers, just real Northumberland jobs woven into everyday lessons.

Career ideas form before the age of 11, yet most children have little visibility of the opportunities that exist locally. By giving every child a window into local careers, Spark aims to raise aspiration and strengthen the county’s future talent pipeline. The Council’s support keeps the platform heavily subsidised, so every school can take part regardless of size or budget.
