Portage (2 Day) Workshop

An introduction to the Portage approach to working with children with SEND and their families. 

Aimed at: Pre-school and nursery practitioners, school SENCOs, newly qualified practitioners, support staff working with children with SEND. 

Delivered by: Northumberland Portage Service

Format: Face to face

Attendance Fee: £150 per attendee

Course Modules

  • Introduction to Portage ​
  • The Portage Model and its Relevance to Early Years settings ​
  • Helping Children Learn- Using Clear Language ​
  • Helping Children Learn- Planning for Success ​
  • Helping Children Learn– A Small Steps Approach ​
  • Planning, Recording and Sharing Activities ​
  • Supporting the Development of Play ​
  • Positive Approaches to Children’s Behaviour 

The Workshop aims to: develop participants understanding of the Portage Principles and​ their ability to apply Portage skills in the workplace.

On completion of the Workshop participants will be able to:

  • Link the Portage Principles into their current practice.
  • Write specific targets using ‘clear language.’
  • Breakdown long term outcomes into specific short-term outcomes, to set appropriate SMART targets for SEND learners. 
  • Implement practical activities and techniques
  • Implement positive approaches to children’s behaviour
