The four drug related deaths among young people in Newcastle and Washington over the first weekend in October shocked and worried parents, teachers, and young people. Unfortunately, Northumberland is not unaffected by tragedies like these, we have had a recent situation where a young person died after taking MDMA.
It is our hope and ambition that staff in schools feel well enough supported and equipped to have the conversations we need to have with students at a time like this. There is an expectation for schools to deliver PHSE lessons regarding drugs and it can be daunting tackling an emotive subject and one that young people may feel they know a lot about without knowing the full facts.
It may be that you would like to refresh your understanding or know where to obtain the most current information to help you to talk to and inform all young people, whether or not you consider them to be vulnerable.
SORTED and Public Health are keen to support schools to access the most relevant and accurate information to do this. Please join us for a webinar for staff working with 11-19 year olds on 11th November 15:30 to 16:30. If this date isn’t convenient for you and you would still like to be involved more dates will become available over the course of the year.
