Sport England has recently awarded funding to Northumberland Sport to undertake a research project to understand the barriers that schools across the county face in opening their facilities for community use outside of the school day. The ultimate aim of this project is to support schools and local providers to develop business solutions to open up more school facilities to serve the needs of local communities more effectively. This connects to the wider cross-government School Sport & Activity Action Plan published in July 2019 by the Department for Education, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and the Department for Health & Social Care.
This work will be delivered in 3 phases between December 2019 & August 2020 and learning throughout will be used and shared with schools. We are currently undertaking the first phase of the work to map out the current picture in Northumberland; identifying those schools who already open their facilities and as part of this work we will be looking at the success factors and how we can share best practice with other schools. We are also keen to hear from schools who do not open their facilities, particularly looking at the reasons for this and potential solutions.
To aid with our research, we have prepared a brief questionnaire which I would appreciate if your school could complete by Friday 20th December 2019. If you feel like this survey would benefit from multiple responses (including differences in opinion between school staff) then please feel free to distribute the survey link to colleagues
We will be looking to discuss this work with schools in the new year via focus groups, if you are interested in participating in these then please feel free to contact Gail Ballance at Northumberland Sport on firstname.lastname@example.org or on 07966 324405.
