Organised by Northumberland Sport, the Northumberland Young Volunteer Pathway is
primarily funded by Sport England and Northumberland County Council in partnership with
the Youth Sports Trust’s Young Coach Academy and Step into Sport programmes.
The ‘Pathway’ which has been evolving over the past three years had its most successful
year yet last year with over 75 young people taking part. The scheme is FREE for young
people to take part in and runs over a number of dates:
● Induction event: 8th November @ St. James Park 10am – 3pm
This is a theory based day which is led by a ‘Sporting Champion’, it is designed to
give the young people an understanding of what makes a good volunteer, leader or
coach and gets them thinking about their current skill set and areas they may want to
There will be a session with teachers to help support the young people back in
● Practical based training: 1st April 2020 (TBC) @ Sports Central, Northumbria
University 10am – 3pm
This day focuses on developing the young people’s coaching, officiating and
leadership skills through practical based workshops and coaching. It also gives the
young people an opportunity to experience university life, have a tour of the facilities
and learn more about what Northumbria University has to offer.
● Northumberland Para Games: 29th April 2020 TBC
● Northumberland School Games County Festival: 25th June 2020 @ Cramlington
Learning Village (times to be confirmed)
This gives the young people the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt
and be part of the School Games workforce.
● Celebration event: Early July 2020 TBC
This event recognises the achievements of the successful young people across the
academic year. Hosted at a quality venue and compared by a ‘Sporting Champion’
the evening is a great way to graduate from the programme.
We have had some great testimonies from teachers whose children were part of the
‘Pathway’ last year:
I am writing to say a big thank you on behalf of Haydon Bridge High School for a wonderful
evening at Close House yesterday. It was both moving and inspirational to reflect on the
progress my particular cohort of students has made over the course of the volunteer
pathway this year and how the benefits have manifested themselves not just in their sport
and coaching but in all areas of their lives and personal development.
Your programme has given each young person the chance to realise that potential, in both
senses. This was clearly evident at the School Games last Thursday when the pride and
sense of achievement on the bus home were palpable.
So thank you for all your hard work in coordinating the four events and I very much look
forward to our students working with you on the programme next year.
The scheme is free for schools to take part in and we cover the costs of transport to and
from the events highlighted below. All we ask is that the young people are accompanied by
The target age group for this Pathway is 14-18 years. We would encourage you to select
young people from across the age range and we would like there to be a focus on selecting
young people where this will have the biggest impact on their development (we are not
necessarily looking for the ‘sportiest’ or most ‘active’ young people).
Places are limited to 15 young people per school and are given on a first come basis. If you
sign up to the programme you must attend all the events listed above.
To sign up to the programme please email email@example.com no later than
