For the attention of: All schools and academies
Autumn term: We would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the remaining CPD sessions this term.
Fundamentals of HR
- 1 December 09:00 – 13:00 at Hexham Priory School
- 6 December 09:30 – 13:30 at Northumbria House.
Please note: This session is only available during autumn term – please book now to secure your place.
The session is targeted at new and aspiring headteachers, school business managers and governors and is an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of people management principles as applied in a school context. The session covers the employment life cycle from recruitment & selection processes, through appraisal, management of disciplinary and grievance matters, sickness absence management and school staffing restructures, up to resignation or dismissal.
Spring term: We would also like to make you aware of CPD sessions already scheduled for next term. Further sessions will be arranged following an analysis of the feedback from you via our current customer satisfaction survey.
DfE guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ specifies the statutory requirement that at least one appointment panel member has undertaken accredited safer recruitment training. We strongly recommend that schools consider training more than one individual in safer recruitment to ensure capacity to meet this statutory requirement. The 1 – day course covers best practice to be adopted when recruiting and selecting adults to work with children in schools. The course assists in the development of recruitment procedures and strategies that deter, identify and reject unsuitable applicants. Training is delivered by trainers accredited by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation (DfE Approved Provider).
Please note the 23 January session is fully subscribed. You can however add your name to the waiting list and will be sent an email with details of further sessions.
How to be an Effective Investigatory Officer
ACAS strongly recommends that any Investigating Officer has undergone formal training in undertaking investigations. Develop your skills and confidence in conducting investigatory interviews, writing an effective investigation report and prepare yourself for attendance at formal hearings.
- 15 January 12:30-16:30 at County Hall
- 8 March 12:30-16:30 at Northumbria House
Successful Management of Sickness Absence
Managing sickness absence proactively can have a significant impact on the effectiveness and efficiency of your school.
The session will cover sickness reporting and monitoring, referral to Occupational Health, identifying and managing absence triggers, stress prevention and management, early intervention, equality issues and when and how to commence a formal absence management investigation.
27 February 12:30-16:30 at Northumbria House
We will also be arranging sessions on conducting school structure reviews and redundancy processes during the Spring term.
Please note that the sessions are available to all schools and academies. Sessions are at no extra charge to schools subscribing to the enhanced HR SLA. Supplementary charges apply to schools subscribing to the standard HR SLA at a discounted rate. Schools not subscribing to the SLA can also access this provision at a cost of £75 per person. Please note that if the session is oversubscribed schools purchasing the HR SLA at the enhanced level will be given priority.
