FAO: Headteachers of First and Primary Schools and Reception Class Teachers
Ofsted have published a report (click here) focusing on the Reception curriculum in successful schools and how well it prepares 4 and 5 year olds for the rest of their education and beyond. This is essential reading for all headteachers of first and primary schools as well as reception class teachers.
Amongst other key recommendations, the report identifies that “reading was at the heart of the curriculum in the most successful classes” and children were given opportunities to “read out loud frequently from carefully selected books… story time was a valued part of the daily routine… developing children’s language, vocabulary and comprehension”.
The Early Years Team are running a training session at Morpeth Golf Club on Thursday 7th December ’17 entitled ‘Nurturing Storytellers & Authors‘. This course addresses the recommendations in the report in relation to reading. We believe that in light of this report that reception teachers in particular would benefit greatly from attending. There are only a few spaces left so we would urge practitioners wishing to attend to book on in the usual way ASAP.
